Liquid Courage and Bear Floaties

The water shimmered like broken glass in the afternoon sun, reflecting the laughter that rippled across Tyler's backyard. Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline, thumb hovering over Jordan's text—"u coming?"

Her heart did that stupid flutter thing whenever she thought about him, which was, like, constantly. Ever since she'd accidentally sent him that Voice Note of her singing along to Sabrina Carpenter instead of her physics homework (mortifying, truly), she'd been lowkey avoiding him. But here she was, at the party of the summer, frozen like a deer in headlights.

"Yo Maya, you gonna stand there all day looking like a lost puppy?" Tyler called out, already wet and laughing, balanced precariously atop a giant inflatable bear. The bear's goofy face stared back at her, its rainbow sunglasses mocking her anxiety.

She'd barely slipped off her slides when someone's cat—Mr. Whiskers, the neighborhood's most judgmental feline—strolled through the open gate, tail held high like he owned the place. The cat paused, gave the pool one disgusted look, then plopped dramatically onto Maya's discarded towel like it was a velvet throne.

"That's my CAT!" Mia screamed from the shallow end, horrified. "Someone grab him before he realizes he hates water!"

What happened next was chaos. Pure, teenage, beautiful chaos. Tyler fell off the bear trying to rescue Mr. Whiskers. The bear tipped sideways, dumping Jordan—yes, THAT Jordan, wearing the navy swim trunks that made her stomach do backflips—directly into Maya's path.

They collided in a splash of chlorinated water and flailing limbs. For three seconds that felt like forever, they were tangled together, his hands on her arms to steady her, her face inches from his.

"You came," he said, breathless and grinning like he'd just won the lottery.

She laughed, genuinely laughed, all her anxiety dissolving like sugar in the pool. "Yeah," Maya said, as Mr. Whiskers deigned to allow Tyler to scoop him up, the cat radiating offended dignity. "I guess I did."

Later, wrapped in a towel and watching the sun dip below the fence line, her iPhone buzzed with a new message from Jordan: "pool party 2mrw? same bear. bring u're bathing suit ;-)"

Maybe being seventeen wasn't so terrible after all.
