Lines in the Dark

palmlightningfriend

The neon palm reader's sign flickered in the window, casting intermittent pink light onto Sarah's bare arms. She'd parked three blocks away to avoid being seen, her Honda Civic sandwiched between a rusted pickup and something that might once have been a sports car. This was not the kind of place a partner at Mitchell & Burke visited on a Tuesday evening.

Inside, the air smelled of incense and desperation. An elderly woman with kohled eyes gestured to the velvet chair. Sarah extended her hand, fingers trembling.

"You're waiting for something," the woman said, tracing the life line with a yellowed nail. "Someone to make the first move."

Outside, lightning shattered the darkness, illuminating the cramped space through gaps in the heavy curtains. Sarah flinched. The attorney general's investigation was closing in. Every email, every padded hour billed, every "friend" who'd suddenly stopped returning her calls—

"You betrayed someone," the palm reader continued, voice flat. "Or you will."

Sarah's breath caught. The partner track. The junior associate she'd pushed out three years ago when he'd questioned the billing practices. Emily, who'd called her "sister" at firm retreats, who'd trusted her mentorship. Sarah had justified it then—necessary, professional, nothing personal. But Emily's departure had triggered everything. The whistleblower complaint. The audit.

"The lines show a choice coming," the woman said. "Stay and burn, or walk and lose everything you built."

Another flash of lightning. In that stark illumination, Sarah saw herself clearly—not the lawyer, not the mentor, not the friend she pretended to be. Someone who'd sacrificed people like currency, who'd confused survival with integrity.

"How much?" Sarah asked, pulling her hand back.

"Whatever it's worth to you."

She left twice what she asked. Outside, thunder rattled the pavement. Sarah got into her car and sat motionless, hands gripping the steering wheel, knowing exactly what she needed to do next, and exactly how much it would cost.
