Line of Last Resort

The night shift had a way of stripping everything down to its essentials. Sarah sat in the security booth, watching the monitors as if they might suddenly reveal something worth seeing. Beside her, the cat purred against her leg—the only living thing that didn't seem to mind her perpetual exhaustion.

Outside, a dog barked somewhere in the distance, lonely and persistent. Sarah checked her phone again. Still nothing from Mark. Three weeks of silence since he'd walked out with nothing more than a suitcase and half their savings.

The storm outside intensified. Rain lashed against the booth's single window. A large shape lumbered past the chain-link fence—a bear, likely from the nearby preserve, searching for food in the dumpsters. It had been showing up more often lately, as if the world had become too hostile even for wildlife.

"You going to eat that?" The voice startled her. It was Hernandez, the other guard, appearing like a ghost in the doorway.

Sarah shook her head. He took the untouched sandwich from her desk.

"You look like shit," he said around a mouthful of ham and wheat.

"Thanks."

"He's not coming back."

She'd been hearing this for weeks—from her sister, from coworkers, from herself in the mirror at 3 AM.

"I know," she said.

"So what's the bull?" Hernandez asked, wiping crumbs from his beard. "Why keep holding on?"

The cable running from her earbud to her phone had been tangled around her fingers for hours. She could call Mark. She could call her mother. She could call anyone. Instead, she just kept twisting the cord around her finger until the tip turned purple.

"Because," she said, finally looking at Hernandez, "if I let go, I'm not sure I'll still be here."

The bear appeared at the fence again, watching them with dark, patient eyes. The cat purred louder. Somewhere, the dog kept barking.

Sarah reached for the phone, for the first time in three weeks. The cable coiled around her hand like a lifeline she was finally ready to use.
