Lightning Strikes the Sphinx

Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing her frizzy hair for the thousandth time. The hat—an oversized vintage beanie she'd thrifted—sat crooked on her head, covering the worst of the anxiety-induced hair disaster. Tonight was the Winter Formal, and somehow her friend group had convinced her to go. Even though she'd rather stay home re-watching her favorite show for the fourth time.

The gymnasium already thumped with bass that vibrated through the soles of her Converse. Clouds of expensive perfume mixed with nervous sweat. Maya pressed herself against the wall near the punch bowl, clutching her red Solo cup like it was a lifeline. Her ancient history project sat at the back of her mind—she'd spent three weeks building a miniature sphinx out of clay, only to have it collapse in the kiln yesterday. Mr. Harrison had given her an extension, but the disappointment still stung.

"Hey, Maya!" Danny appeared, looking unfairly calm in a wrinkled dress shirt. "You gonna stand there all night or actually dance?"

She shrugged. "Just observing. Like a sphinx."

"A sphinx with really cute boots," he countered, and she couldn't help the small smile.

Outside, lightning flashed, illuminating the gym through the high windows. The storm they'd been predicting all week had finally arrived. Rain drummed against the roof, barely audible over the remix blasting through the speakers.

Then it happened—her phone pinged. A notification from the group chat: Chloe had just posted a photo of Maya standing alone, captioned "always the weirdo never the prom queen." The pyramid of plastic cups on the nearby table suddenly seemed fascinating as tears stung her eyes.

But then Danny did something unexpected. He posted his own photo: Maya's clay sphinx from the classroom display, captioned "artists observe differently. That's why they're brilliant."

"You showed everyone my broken sphinx?" Maya whispered.

"I showed everyone your actual name, genius," he said, gesturing at her art portfolio app open on her phone. "Chloe's post already got deleted by mods. Yours is still up."

Maya's breath caught. People were liking it. Commenting with fire emojis and heart eyes. Her phone buzzed with friend requests from people who'd never spoken to her before.

"Want to dance?" Danny asked, extending his hand.

Maya adjusted her hat, took a deep breath, and grabbed his hand. "Only if you promise not to step on my boots."

"No promises," he grinned, leading her toward the crowd where lightning flashed through the windows again, illuminating everything.
