Lightning Strikes the Same Place Twice

The pool at the corporate retreat was mirror-still, reflecting the gathering storm above. Maya sat on the deck with a second martini, watching the water blur into darkness as lightning fractured the sky. She was tired — the kind of exhaustion that hollows you out, leaving you moving through days like one of the walking dead, a zombie inhabiting your own life.

Her friend and coworker, Daniel, dropped into the chair beside her. They'd been close once, before promotions and politics turned everything transactional. 'You good?' he asked, not really asking.

'Just thinking about that stray cat outside the conference center,' Maya said. 'The one that's been staring at us through the glass all week like it knows something we don't.'

Daniel laughed, but it didn't reach his eyes. 'We're all just stray cats, Maya. Looking for warmth that won't last.'

The first raindrop hit the pool's surface, sending ripples outward in perfect concentric circles. More followed, until the water danced with the storm. Maya wanted to strip off her heels and dress and dive in — surface from the water someone new, someone who hadn't spent seven years climbing a ladder that led nowhere.

Instead, she turned to Daniel. 'Remember when we were going to change things? When we swore we'd never become them?'

He swirled his drink. 'We became them anyway. Just with better playlists and worse sleep.'

Lightning illuminated his face — the new lines, the tired eyes, the ghost of the person she'd known. In that flash, she saw everything they'd lost and everything they'd never admit to sacrificing.

'Maybe it's not too late,' she said, though she didn't believe it.

Daniel reached for her hand, his palm warm against hers. For a moment, they were twenty-five again, infinite and fearless, before the rain washed the moment away and they were just two people watching a storm, pretending tomorrow would be different.
