Lightning Strikes the Pyramid

The **pool** party at Dylan's house was basically the social event of the summer, and I was seriously regretting wearing this swimsuit. Two-piece? Check. Confidence? Negative.

"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like a human personification of awkward?" my best friend Chloe whispered.

"I'm assessing the situation," I lied. The real situation? I was at the bottom of the social **pyramid**, and Dylan's crew was at the top. Like, tippy-top. They were playing **padel** on the court behind the pool, laughing at inside jokes I'd never understand.

"Yo, Tyler! Get in here!" Dylan shouted. This was it. My invitation to ascend the pyramid.

I jumped in, making way too big of a splash, and surfaced to everyone staring. Cool. So smooth.

"We need a fourth for padel," Dylan explained. "You down?"

"Yeah! Totally!" I said, trying to sound casual while internally screaming. I'd never played, but YouTube tutorials counted, right?

I grabbed a racquet and stepped onto the court. Dylan served, and I somehow managed to hit it back. We were playing doubles: me and Dylan vs. Chloe and this girl Sofia.

Then came the moment. Dylan set up the perfect shot for me. A high return, easy point. I wound up, swung, and—completely whiffed. The ball hit me in the face.

Dead silence. Then Dylan started laughing. Not mean laughing, but genuine, doubled-over laughing. Soon everyone joined in, even me. Something shifted.

Suddenly, lightning cracked across the sky, close enough that the hair on my arms stood up. Thunder shook the ground.

"Everyone out of the pool! NOW!" Dylan's dad yelled.

We scrambled toward the house, drenched from the sudden downpour. Dylan high-fived me in the chaos. "That whiff was legendary, bro. You're definitely coming back."

Under the patio, watching the lightning flash, the pyramid didn't matter anymore. I was just a teenager who'd embarrassed himself in front of the popular crowd and somehow made friends instead.

Best summer ever.
