Lightning Strike at Midnight

Maya's hair fell to the salon floor in dark chunks, her waist-length locks gone. The new pixie cut felt like armor against freshman year expectations. Her best friend Chloe, however, stared like Maya'd grown a second head.

"That's... bold," Chloe said, voice tight.

Maya spent the next week trying to decode their friendship. Had she changed too much? She started "spying" on Chloe's social media—checking who liked her posts, what she was doing without Maya. Pathetic, maybe, but everything felt different now.

Then came the annual back-to-school party at Tyler's farm. Maya showed up feeling electric, her new hair catching the moonlight. But Chloe ghosted her, spending the night clinging to the popular crowd.

"This is bull," Maya muttered, heading toward the fence line where Tyler's family kept their livestock. She needed air, space, anything but this suffocating social minefield.

That's when she found him—Ethan, the quiet skater boy from her English class, sitting on the fence watching a massive bull in the adjacent pasture.

"Intense, right?" Ethan said. "That bull's been staring at me for twenty minutes. I think he's judging my life choices."

Maya laughed, surprised. "Same. My hair's apparently mine."

"It looks sick," Ethan said, meeting her eyes. "Seriously."

Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating his smile. They talked for hours—about anxiety, expectations, how everyone expected them to be people they weren't. No performative coolness, no carefully curated posts. Just real conversation.

When Chloe finally found them, rain falling around them, Maya realized something had shifted. The friendship she'd been clinging to had been dead for months. This—this connection sparking in the storm like lightning—was real.

"Ready to go back?" Ethan asked.

Maya touched her pixie cut, feeling powerful. "Nah. I'm good right here."
