Lightning Over the Pyramid

The cafeteria's social pyramid loomed over me like it always did—popular kids at the apex, everyone else scattered below. I sat with my usual crew near the bottom, trying to look chill while internally panicking.

"Yo Maya, you gonna try it or just stare at it?" Marcus nudged my tray.

My mom had packed sliced papaya again. Weirdly exotic fruit that screamed 'I don't know what teenagers actually eat.' But today, I decided to lean into it.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm trying it." I popped a piece in my mouth. Sweet, musky, totally unfamiliar.

"That's actually not terrible," I admitted, wiping my mouth with my napkin. Big mistake. According to Jenna later, I had spinach in my teeth for the next three periods. Classic.

The real disaster happened during art club. Someone's cat—a calico that apparently belonged to the drama teacher—had wandered into the building and decided my sculpture project was its personal enemy. It knocked over my clay pyramid and sent it shattering across the floor.

I knelt to clean it up, face burning, when Jordan from the popular table walked over.

"Need help?" he asked, kneeling beside me.

We worked in silence, gathering clay shards. Outside, lightning cracked the sky, rain suddenly hammering the windows.

"Your pyramid was actually sick," Jordan said quietly. "I liked how you made it uneven. Not perfect like everyone else's."

I stared at him. "Thanks?"

"Yeah. And uh, nice papaya at lunch. Bold move." He grinned, standing up. "See you around, Maya."

I sat there on the floor, heart doing something weird and fluttery, while the cat purred on a nearby table. Sometimes the universe breaks your pyramid and gives you something better instead.
