Lightning Over The Padel Court
My trucker hat was basically part of my skull at this point. Forward-facing, slightly bent brim, the whole deal. It was my armor against the universe, especially today, standing in the country club my mom dragged us to for the summer. I was giving major fish-out-of-water energy, and everyone knew it.
Then I saw her across the padel court — Chloe, wearing those tiny skirts and serving looks and volley shots like she'd been born with a racket in her hand. I was absolutely cooked.
"Wanna sub in?" someone yelled. My brain said no. My desperate-for-attention mouth said, "Bet."
I stepped onto the court like I owned the place, immediately tripped over my own feet, and ate it spectacularly. The collective sigh from the sidelines was brutal. Chloe laughed, but not mean — like, actually amused. I caught her eye and my stomach did that thing where it forgets how to stomach.
Later, at the refreshments table, I reached for what I thought was a mango and took a massive bite. The guy next to me stared. "That's papaya, btw."
"Yeah," I said, mouth full of weird melon situation, "I know. Love it. Super into papaya. It's my whole personality."
He raised one eyebrow like, we both know that's a lie, but he didn't call me out on it. Small mercies.
Then the sky went purple-sick. Lightning cracked the horizon in half, and everyone started scrambling toward the clubhouse. Except me and Chloe, who both somehow ended up under the same tiny overhang by the courts while the sky opened up.
"Your hat," she said, yelling over thunder. "It's giving main character energy."
"That's literally the worst compliment I've ever received," I yelled back. "And also, thank you?"
Another lightning strike illuminated everything, and for one second, the world looked completely different — brighter, sharper, like someone had turned up the saturation. She looked at me, really looked at me, and my stomach did the thing again, harder this time.
"Wanna get papaya tomorrow?" I asked, channeling my absolute bravest self. "Like, on purpose this time?"
She grinned. "Only if you wear the hat."
"Deal."
The storm passed. Everything changed. The papaya was actually mid, but the girl? The girl was everything.
