Lightning Over the Padel Court

The ball cracked against the glass wall, returning to Elena's paddle with mechanical precision. Another Thursday evening at the club, another padel match that felt less like recreation and more like another item on her endless checklist.

"You're playing like a zombie today," her opponent Marcus called out, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Everything okay at the firm?"

Elena didn't answer. She was thirty-eight years old, a partner at a law firm she'd dreamed of joining since law school, and she couldn't remember the last time she'd felt anything resembling joy. Just the rhythmic motion of work, sleep, repeat—walking through each day with her palm pressed against the glass of her own life, watching from the outside as she made decisions that supposedly mattered.

Storm clouds had been gathering all afternoon. Now, as they reached match point, the sky opened up. Lightning fractured the darkness beyond the court's glass walls, illuminating the empty pool beyond the clubhouse. The water's surface caught the flash—a momentary electric blue that vanished as quickly as it appeared.

They kept playing. That's what they did. Keep going regardless of conditions.

"Check!" Marcus shouted as the game ended. Neither had truly won.

They walked to the clubhouse in silence, passing the pool where rain now created concentric circles, each one distorting the reflection of palm trees swaying in the wind. Elena stood at the edge, watching the water merge with the falling rain until surface and depth became indistinguishable.

"I'm going to leave the firm," she said, the words feeling foreign in her mouth.

Marcus nodded slowly. "I wondered when you'd say that."

Another flash of lightning, closer this time. The thunder followed seconds later, shaking the ground beneath their feet. For the first time in months—years, maybe—Elena felt something real. Fear, certainly. But also possibility.

She extended her hand, palm upward, letting the rain collect there. Not a zombie anymore. Just a woman standing by a pool in the middle of a storm, finally ready to choose her own game.
