Lightning Over the Infinity Pool

The lightning fractured the sky above the infinity pool, illuminating Elena's face in strobe-light flashes. She'd been following me for three days—corporate spy turned personal detective, or perhaps something else entirely.

"Your husband knows," I said, not turning around. The water lapped against the pool's edge, distant and indifferent.

Elena's dog—a massive pit bull she called Brutus—growled low in his throat. The animal sensed what she refused to acknowledge. Some secrets are too heavy to carry alone.

"He's going to lose everything," she said, her voice raw. "The bull market masked his fraud for years, but the audit will expose it all."

I'd been hired to find proof of embezzlement. Instead, I'd found something worse: a woman who loved a man who'd manufactured a financial house of cards, knowing it would eventually crush everyone beneath it. Including her.

"You could walk away," I said.

"With what?" She laughed bitterly. "I'm complicit. I signed the documents. I enjoyed the life."

Lightning struck closer now. The storm was moving in, hungry and relentless. Brutus pressed against his mistress's leg, sensing her unraveling.

"There's another option," I said quietly. "The whistleblower protection program. Testify, give them everything, start over."

She turned to me then, and for the first time, I saw something beyond the carefully curated wife of a tech CEO. I saw a woman who'd been waiting—perhaps for years—for someone to offer her a way out.

"Would you come with me?" she asked.

The question hung between us, dangerous and full of possibilities. I'd never mixed business with anything resembling a future. But the lightning flashing in her eyes made me reconsider every rule I'd ever lived by.

Some betrayals are necessary. Some are salvations.

"Yes," I said.

And as the storm finally broke, we walked away from the pool together, leaving everything we'd known behind us.
