Lightning on the Padel Court

Marco served the ball hard, the rubber padel racquet connecting with a satisfying thwack against the glass backboard. They'd been playing together every Thursday for three years, ever since Elena's divorce, ever since she'd shown up at his door with a bottle of whiskey and asked him to teach her the sport.

Today though, something was off. Her returns were sluggish. She kept checking her phone between points, something she never did.

'Everything okay?' Marco asked, wiping sweat from his forehead.

Elena hesitated. 'I'm leaving the city.'

The words hung between them like smoke. 'What?'

'Job offer. Barcelona. I'm supposed to fly out Sunday.' She forced a laugh. 'Funny, right? We've been playing padel for years, and now I'm finally moving to the country where the sport was invented.'

Marco felt something crack open in his chest. They were just friends—had always been just friends—but somewhere along the line, these Thursday games had become the one immutable thing in both their chaotic lives.

Later, they sat at the poolside bar, legs dangling in the water. The evening sky purpled, thick with summer heat.

'You never told me you were even looking,' Marco said quietly.

'I wasn't. Until I was.' She traced patterns on the water's surface. 'Sometimes things just—'

Lightning split the sky, a sudden violent fissure of white. For a heartbeat, everything was illuminated: the empty pool, the padel courts beyond, Elena's face turned toward his with something unreadable in her expression. Then thunder rolled through, shaking the ground beneath them.

'That's my cue,' she said, standing. 'I should probably go finish packing.'

'Elena.' He caught her hand. 'Stay.'

They swam as the storm broke, diving beneath the surface where the world became muffled and weightless. When they finally emerged, shivering and breathless, Marco pulled her close and found her mouth with his. Lightning flashed again, and this time neither of them looked away.
