Lightning in the Water
Maya's curls sprung free like野生电 after the storm, and honestly? She wasn't even mad.
Three hours earlier, she'd been hyperventilating in the bathroom mirror. Her natural hair had always been this whole Thing — her mom called it "blessed," her friends called it "gorgeous," but Maya mostly called it "a literal anxiety spiral." She'd spent the last two years hiding it under bucket hats, beanies, whatever was trending on TikTok that week.
"You going to Jake's padel thing or what?" her little brother shouted through the door. "Em said she's saving you a court spot."
Padel. Jake. The perfect storm of social anxiety. Jake had moved here from Barcelona last month, all tan skin and perfect tennis serve, and somehow Maya had been roped into this casual hangout that was definitely, absolutely, 100% NOT a date (according to Em, who kept "accidentally" mentioning it).
Her cat, Mittens, chose that exact moment to streak through the bathroom like a tiny, furry lightning bolt, knocking Maya's hat off the counter and into the toilet. RIP to the vintage Supreme beanie she'd spent three weeks' allowance on.
"Mittens, WHAT THE —"
Outside, actual lightning cracked the sky open. Thunder shook the windows. Her phone buzzed: *Storm's getting crazy. We're still playing if u want? Jake's teaching me this backhand —*
And in that moment, staring at her reflection, curls everywhere, no hat, no escape route, Maya realized something weird. She looked... fine? Actually, better than fine. She looked like herself.
"Whatever," she said out loud. "Whatever."
She grabbed her racket and ran out into the rain.
By the time she reached the courts, she was soaked. Jake was there, shirt sticking to his abs (she tried SO HARD not to stare), grinning like an idiot. "There she is! We were about to start a doubles tourney without you."
"My cat ate my hat," Maya blurted, then immediately wanted to die. "Like. Literally. Knocked it in the toilet."
Jake laughed. Not mean laughing. The real kind. "Dude. Same. My dog destroyed my lucky headband yesterday. I'm playing with this janky thing from the lost-and-found."
He gestured to his head, where a neon pink sweatband with PROPERTY OF GYM in sharpied letters sat slightly crooked.
Maya's curls dripped down her back. Lightning flashed somewhere over the mountains. Jake's smile was doing something genuinely illegal to her heart rate.
"You serving or what?" she said, and grinned back.
Sometimes the worst disasters become the best origin stories.
