Lightning in the Pyramid
Maya's first high school house party felt like walking into a social pyramid she hadn't studied for. Seniors lounged on sofas like pharaohs, juniors clustered in the kitchen like middle management, and freshmen—including her—hovered near the snacks like peasants hoping for crumbs.
"You good?" Liam asked, appearing beside her with a solo cup.
"Totally," Maya lied, her voice doing that thing where it squeaked on command. "Just... taking it all in."
"Cool cool." He drifted away toward the pyramid of red cups on the beer pong table. Maya's social awkwardness was reaching legendary levels. She'd spent sixteen years perfecting the art of blending into lockers.
Then she saw it—a dog. A golden retriever wearing a tiny party hat.
"Oh my god, are you seeing this?" she whispered to herself. The dog, clearly a veteran of these social gatherings, gave her a look that said, "Humans are weird, kid."
Maya followed it through sliding doors into the backyard. The dog—"Biscuit," according to the tag—led her to a quiet corner away from the bass thumping inside.
"You too, huh?" she sat on the grass. Biscuit dropped a tennis ball. She threw it. He brought it back. Simple. No social pyramid. No awkward small talk.
Suddenly, the sky cracked open. Lightning split the darkness like it was trying to make a point. Rain came down in sheets—Maya and Biscuit bolted toward the covered porch just as the party flooded outside, everyone shrieking and laughing.
"YO, THAT WAS LIT!" someone yelled.
Maya stood there, soaked hair plastered to her face, Biscuit shaking water everywhere (including onto some junior varsity football player). And for the first time all night, she wasn't overthinking. She was just... there.
"Nice dodge," Liam said, squeezing onto the porch beside her.
"Thanks," Maya said, and this time her voice didn't squeak. "Biscuit saved me."
"That dog's a legend." He grinned. "Hey, you wanna get pizza after? With me and some people?"
The pyramid didn't matter anymore. Lightning had struck, and Maya had made it through her first party. With a dog as her wingman.
