Lightning in the Orange Jacket

Maya's hair was that perfect shade of orange—the kind that made people stare in hallways, the kind her aunt called "fire hazard" but Maya called her armor. She'd dyed it sophomore year, right after the breakup that made her feel like walking through school as a zombie, dead inside but somehow still moving.

Now here she was at Kevin's party, nursing a warm soda, watching the cool kids like a spy from her corner near the overflowing trash can. That's when she saw Riley—freshman, glitter smeared across her face, having what looked like a full-blown panic attack near the bathroom door.

Maya debated pretending not to notice. That's what she did best—invisible observer, collecting social intelligence like she was running some undercover operation. But something about Riley's terrified deer-in-headlights expression hit different.

"Hey," Maya said, suddenly standing there. "You good?"

Riley jumped. "I—everyone's so—I can't—"

"First party?" Maya guessed. Riley nodded, eyes wide.

"Same," Maya said, grabbing two fresh cans from the cooler. "Wanna bail? We can say we saw a fox in the backyard or something."

Riley actually laughed. A real one.

They ended up on the front porch, October air biting at their exposed skin, talking about everything and nothing until Maya's phone buzzed—her mom, probably wondering where she was. The moment felt like lightning, sudden and electric and gone too fast.

"You're not really a zombie, you know," Riley said suddenly, head tilted. "You're just... selective."

Maya smiled, something genuine stretching across her face for the first time in months. "Yeah. Maybe."

Sometimes the coolest spy missions are the ones where you stop watching and actually start living.
