Lightning in the Lunchroom
Marcus slumped against the cafeteria wall, phone clutched like a lifeline. Three weeks into freshman year and he'd already mastered the art of looking busy while dying inside.
"You're totally spying on her again," Jade deadpanned, sliding onto the bench beside him. "It's getting creepy, bro."
"I'm not spying!" Marcus protested, though his eyes betrayed him, darting toward Chloe across the room. "I'm conducting... research. For educational purposes."
Jade snorted. "That girl could have spinach in her teeth and you'd still think she's perfect."
Almost on cue, the cafeteria lights flickered. Outside, summer storms had been brewing all morning, dark clouds gathering like forgotten homework assignments. **Lightning** cracked somewhere beyond the windows, followed immediately by thunder that rattled the vending machines.
Then Travis waltzed in with his entourage like they owned the school. The **bull** of sophomore year, Travis had made it his personal mission to make Marcus's life miserable since day one. Today's target: Chloe's table.
"Yo, spinach-breath," Travis announced to the entire cafeteria, gesturing toward Marcus. "Maybe don't stare so hard. You look like you're plotting something."
Laughter erupted like chain reaction. Marcus's face burned hotter than the cafeteria pizza.
But then Chloe stood up.
"Actually," she said, her voice cutting through the noise like the lightning outside, "Marcus wasn't staring. He was watching me wave at him. Because we're partners for the history project. Remember?"
The room went dead silent.
Chloe walked over to Marcus's table, sat down across from him, and pulled out her phone. "So, history project. You ready to actually do some work, or were you planning to **spy** on me all lunch?"
Marcus blinked. "I... what?"
"You're cute when you're confused," she said, then reached across the table. "By the way, you've got **spinach** in your teeth."
The laughter that followed was different this time—lighter, genuine. Marcus caught Jade's smirk across the table. Outside, the rain started falling, washing away the stormy atmosphere like magic.
Sometimes, Marcus thought as he finally smiled, life's worst moments could turn around in a heartbeat. Like lightning.
