Lightning in the Living Room

The bass from the living room thrummed through my chest like a second heartbeat. I'd been standing by the snack table for twenty minutes, scrolling through my iPhone like it held the secrets to the universe. It didn't. Just TikToks of people living lives cooler than mine and three unread texts from my mom asking if I was having fun.

I felt like a zombie — not the cool Netflix kind, but the actual exhausted, socially awkward kind that had been awake since 6 AM for cross-country practice and now couldn't figure out how to exist at a house party without looking like a total loser. Maya was across the room, laughing at something Tyler said, her orange crop top glowing under the LED lights.

Maya. The reason I'd even come tonight.

A crack of thunder shook the windows. The party didn't skip a beat, but I felt it in my teeth. Another rumble, closer this time. The strobe lights flickered and died, plunging half the room into darkness.

"Whoa," someone said.

Then: FLASH. Lightning illuminated everything in stark, ghostly white — Maya's startled expression, Tyler's hand reaching toward her, the half-empty solo cups scattered across the carpet like plastic promises. In that second, the Instagram story version of this moment — the one I'd been mentally curating all night — fell apart.

Maya wasn't having the time of her life. She looked uncomfortable. Tyler wasn't charming; he looked like he was working too hard. And me? I saw myself reflected in the darkened window — phone in hand, watching instead of living.

The lights flickered back on. Someone started shouting about a power outage being "actually iconic." I pocketed my iPhone, walked over to where Maya stood looking awkwardly at Tyler, and said, "Hey, want to get some air? The lightning's supposed to get crazy."

She practically teleported away from Tyler. "Yes, oh my god, please."

We sat on the front porch watching the sky split open, eating those stale orange chips from the snack bowl. No posts. No stories. Just lightning strikes and finally, finally, actually having fun.
