Lightning in the Double Life

spyzombielightning

Maya felt like a spy in her own life. At school, she was the quiet girl who sat in the back, hoodie up, headphones on. But at home? She was basically a different person— blasting K-pop in her room while sketching anime characters until 3 AM, posting art that got hundreds of likes on Instagram. None of her school friends knew about her 12k followers. None of her online friends knew she barely spoke in real life.

The zombie fatigue hit around November. Midterms. College applications. The endless grind of AP Chem where Mr. Henderson droned on about electron configurations while Maya fought to keep her eyes open. Everyone shuffled through halls like the walking dead, phones glued to hands, brains fried from scrolling and studying and pretending to care.

"You okay, chica?" Sofia asked at lunch one day.

Maya nodded. She couldn't explain that her secret online identity felt more real than anything happening in this cafeteria.

Then came the lightning moment—literally and figuratively. A storm rolled in during soccer practice. Maya, who'd joined the team to make her college apps look "well-rounded," watched from the bench as rain sheeted down. Her teammate Kai sat beside her, scrolling through art accounts on Instagram.

"This artist is insane," Kai said, turning his phone toward her.

Maya's heart stopped. It was her art.

"Wait, you follow @midnight_inink?"

"Dude, everyone does. She's like, mysterious AF but her stuff hits different."

Maya felt the truth clawing up her throat. For months, she'd been a spy in her own life, hiding the parts that actually made her feel alive. But here was Kai—popular, funny, totally normal Kai— talking about HER art like it mattered.

"That's me," she whispered.

Kai stared at her. Then at the phone. Then back at her. A flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating his shocked expression.

"No way."

"Way."

They sat there in the rain as the storm raged, two zombies waking up together. Maya wasn't hiding anymore. The double life collapsed into something real.
