Lightning in the Dead Zone
Maya felt like a zombie scrolling through her iphone at 2 AM, thumb swiping through lives that looked way better than hers. Junior year was eating her alive, and the group chat was still blowing up about Tyler's party—everyone going except her, apparently.
"You coming?" The text from Leo lit up her screen like tiny lightning.
She shouldn't. But she grabbed her hoodie and sneakers anyway.
The party was already wild when she arrived. Tyler—aka "The Bull" because he once tackled someone in gym class and didn't apologize—was holding court in the kitchen. His laugh echoed through the house like he owned everything, including the people in it.
Then she saw Raven.
Raven sat in the corner with a sphinx tattoo on her neck, watching everything like she was solving a puzzle nobody else knew existed. She was the kind of mysterious that made you say stupid things.
"Nice," Maya pointed at the tattoo. "Riddles, right?"
Raven's eyes locked onto hers. "What's the answer?"
"To what?"
"The riddle everyone's afraid to ask." Raven stood up. "Let's get some air."
They ended up on the roof as lightning streaked across the sky. The storm was rolling in fast.
"So," Raven said. "What's your deal?"
"What?" Maya laughed nervously. "I don't have a deal."
"Everyone has a deal. Mine's that I see through people's bullshit." Rain started falling. "The Bull acts tough because his dad left. Leo texts girls he's actually scared of. And you..."
Maya's heart hammered. "And me what?"
"You're waiting for permission to exist."
The words hit like lightning—bright, shocking, and impossible to look away from.
"So," Raven smiled as rain soaked them both. "What's your answer?"
Maya looked at her phone. The notifications, the likes, the pressure to be something she wasn't. She tapped the power button. Screen went dark.
"I don't need permission," Maya said, and realized it was true.
Raven grinned. "Exactly."
Below them, the party raged on like nothing had changed. But everything had.
