Lightning in the Chlorine
The pool party was supposed to be the highlight of sophomore year, but here I was, clutching my **water** bottle like a security blanket while everyone else actually *swam*. Even Kyle, who somehow managed to look confident doing literally anything, was doing cannonballs off the diving board.
I'd taken my morning **vitamin** with extra hope today – like, maybe vitamin D would give me the courage to actually talk to Maya, who was currently lounging on a pool chair looking like she belonged in a music video. Instead, I was playing **spy** from behind a potted plant, which was honestly pathetic behavior for a fifteen-year-old.
"You gonna stand there all night or actually jump in?"
I nearly knocked over the plant. Maya. Right there. Her swimsuit had little sphinxes on it – or maybe they were cats? I couldn't tell, mostly because my brain had short-circuited like **lightning** striking a telephone pole.
"I was just..."
"Spying on people?" She laughed, but not meanly. "I saw you watching Kyle. He thinks he's so cool with his diving board tricks."
"No! I wasn't –"
"Chill, I'm messing with you." She dipped her feet in the pool. "You coming in or what?"
The water looked terrifying and amazing all at once. Like, what if I jumped wrong? What if I sank? What if this was all some cosmic joke and I was actually incapable of swimming despite lessons?
Then Maya splashed me.
Just a little – but it was like she'd thrown down a gauntlet. Something shifted in my chest, that **lightning** feeling again but warmer this time. I shoved my phone and **water** bottle onto a chair, took a breath, and cannonballed in.
The world went quiet and **water**-muffled for a second, then I broke the surface sputtering while Maya literally clapped.
"Finally! Took you long enough, **spy**."
"Not a **spy**," I said, grinning like an idiot. "Just... cautious."
"Well, you're here now. Want to see if you can beat Kyle at diving? Spoiler: you probably can't. He's been practicing since seventh grade."
Maybe my morning **vitamin** *had* worked. Or maybe it was just that Maya with her sphinx-cat swimsuit and mohawk-edged ponytails had somehow made the terrifying act of existing at a pool party feel... actually okay. Even fun.
"Challenge accepted," I said, and somewhere behind me, the **sphinx** on her swimsuit seemed to wink.
