Lightning in the Chat

Maya's fingers flew across her keyboard, her gaming setup humming like a caged animal. The fox mask she wore in every stream tilted slightly as she leaned in, eyes glued to the chat scrolling faster than she could read.

"YO, is that actually SpyGirl_99 in my chat?" she typed, her stomach doing that thing it always did when she got nervous—like a bunch of butterflies who'd had too much coffee.

The response came instantly. Maybe.

Maya almost fell out of her chair. SpyGirl_99 was *legendary*. The streamer who'd exposed that whole moderator scandal last summer. The one everyone whispered about but nobody actually knew. And here she was, lurking in Maya's tiny channel with its 47 followers.

Her mom yelled something about dinner from downstairs. Maya ignored her, because tonight was important. Tonight she was finally going to tell her chat her real name. Stop being just another faceless avatar.

"spinach_goblin just subscribed with 10 months!" the notification blared across her screen. That was Tyler from school. He'd found her stream somehow. Her face burned behind the mask. What if he told everyone? What if they laughed? What if—

A notification from SpyGirl_99 popped up: "Your stream's good. But you're hiding."

The words hit like lightning. Maya froze. Someone noticed. Someone actually *saw* her.

She thought about the spinach incident last week—how she'd walked around half the day with green stuff stuck in her teeth while everyone silently cracked up. The humiliation still made her want to disappear. But this felt different.

"I'm working up to it," Maya typed back, her hands shaking a little. "It's scary being real out here."

"Everything's scary until you do it," SpyGirl_99 replied. "Also your cable's lagging. Fix your setup before you go live with the reveal."

Maya laughed out loud. This legendary streamer was giving her tech support.

"Thanks fox," she typed, using the nickname that had somehow stuck in her community. "For everything."

She reached up and slowly removed the mask. The real Maya—who loved gaming and secretly wrote poetry and still slept with a stuffed narwhal—was about to show her face.

"Hey everyone," she said to the camera, her voice steadier than she felt. "I'm Maya. And I'm done hiding."

The chat exploded.
