Lightning in My Palm
The party was exactly the kind of social battlefield where I usually vanished into the background. I'm 15, painfully average, and my crush Sofia was across the room laughing at something Jake said - Jake, whose entire personality revolves around being the loudest person in any room. Total bull.
I'd been spying on Sofia's socials for months. Pathetic? Maybe. But in my defense, her posts were basically curated art exhibitions. Meanwhile, my most recent Instagram was a blurry photo of my neighbor's cat sitting on a fence with the caption "cat got dry food today." riveting content.
My palms were sweating. I'd mentally rehearsed approaching her approximately 473 times, but every time, I'd chicken out. Then came the moment that changed everything - her eyes locked with mine across the crowded room. She excused herself from Jake's group and started walking toward me.
"Hey, you're Maya, right?" She smiled, and my heart did this weird fluttery thing. "I saw your post about Lightning - that stray cat near the tennis courts?"
Wait, WHAT?
"You... saw that?" I managed, my voice cracking slightly.
"Yeah! I've been trying to get close to her for weeks. She's so sweet." Sofia pulled out her phone, showing me a photo of - no joke - Lightning sitting on her actual palm, looking completely unimpressed. "I call her Lightning because she's super fast and has this white marking that looks like a zigzag."
My brain short-circuited. This gorgeous, popular girl had not only seen my awkward cat post but was ALSO actively engaged in the exact same slightly-obsessive stray-cat-watching activity as me?
"So..." Sofia bit her lip, looking suddenly nervous. "I was wondering if you'd want to help me figure out where she's having her kittens? I think she's pregnant and I'm worried about..."
"Yes," I said, probably too quickly. "A thousand times yes."
Jake shot us this confused look from across the room, and I realized something: all that time I'd spent spying on Sofia's perfect online presence, worrying I didn't belong in her world, she'd been out here actually caring about the same random stuff I did. The real Sofia wasn't the curated version. She was someone who rescued pregnant stray cats and got nervous about asking for help.
Sometimes the most unexpected lightning strikes happen when you stop watching from the sidelines.
