Lightning in Her Palm

Maya's palms were sweating - like, actual embarrassing amounts - as she waited in line for the school carnival's palm reader booth. Chen had ditched her for the ferris wheel with Skylar (again), leaving Maya alone with her nervous energy and questionable life choices.

"You've got something coming," the palm reader said, her fingers tracing lines across Maya's hand. "Something unexpected. Someone's been watching you, and they're about to make themselves known."

Maya pulled her hand back, weirdly unsettled. "Like, watching me watching me? Or—"

The reader winked. "You'll see."

Stepping outside, Maya scanned the carnival nervously. Was someone actually spying on her? The idea was equal parts creepy and oddly flattering, which felt pathetic even to think.

Then her phone buzzed. New Instagram follow: @liamthefastest, username alone giving it away. Liam Chen, track star and library study buddy, who she'd caught looking at her twice this week but assumed was coincidence.

Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating everything in sudden stark white. Maya spun around and found him standing near the funnel cake stand, not hiding anymore. Their eyes met, and something electric passed between them that had nothing to do with the storm.

"I've wanted to talk to you all year," Liam said, stepping closer. "I just never knew how."

Maya glanced at her still-tingling palm. Some prophecies, she realized, weren't about destiny - they were about opportunities you had to grab for yourself.

The storm broke, rain coming down in sheets as they ran for cover together, laughing like they'd known each other forever. Her palm didn't feel cursed anymore. It felt electric.
