Lightning in Every Sweaty Palm

Maya's palms were sweating so much she could practically water plants with them. Which was ironic, considering she was currently hiding behind a fake palm tree at Jake Carson's house party.

"You okay?" her best friend Kai mouthed from across the room. Maya shook her head violently.

A coaxial cable snaked across the floor, connected to the gaming setup where a bunch of boys were shouting over FIFA. Jake—the Jake, who'd smiled at her in chem lab every day since September—was among them. He caught her eye and grinned. Something electric shot through her, actual lightning in her veins, making her stomach do that terrible flippy thing.

"Maya!" Jake waved her over. "We need a fourth player for Smash. You down?"

Her brain short-circuited. She'd never played Smash in her life. But somehow her legs were moving, and suddenly she was on the couch, controller in hand, everyone watching.

First round: she got absolutely destroyed. Like, 0-to-30 combo destroyed. Some sophomore named Marcus started laughing. "Yo, that's bull, she's not even trying!"

The room went quiet. Maya's face burned. She almost bailed—could grab her phone and pretend her mom was calling.

Then Jake looked at Marcus. "Chill, bro. Everyone starts somewhere." He handed Maya his phone. "Watch this video real quick, it shows the advanced tech skill. It's basically like a vitamin for your game—makes everything healthier."

The metaphor was so dumb she laughed. And suddenly the nervousness cracked open, letting in something else. She spent the next hour learning, actually playing, somehow landing this insane combo that made everyone lose their minds. By midnight, she'd beaten Jake twice.

Walking home under streetlamps, Kai nudged her. "So... Jake was asking for your number."

Maya looked at her hands, still slightly sticky from someone's spilled soda. "I gave it to him already."

"WHEN?!"

"When you went to get more chips." Maya smiled at the memory—Jake's shy smile, the way he'd fumbled with his phone too. "Lightning palms, remember?"

Kai squealed. Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. A new contact. Just J.

Some nights, she thought, you leave your house expecting disaster and find exactly the opposite. Sometimes the fakest palm tree at the worst party becomes the start of something real.
