Lightning in an Orange Sky

The orange glow of the stock ticker reflected in Marcus's exhausted eyes as he stared at the screen. Six months of sleepless nights had led to this moment. His palms were sweating against the mahogany desk, the same desk where he'd signed the papers that launched his startup three years ago.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of his Miami office, palm trees swayed in the gathering storm. Inside, the air conditioning couldn't cool the heat between him and his co-founder.

"I'm telling you, Sarah," Marcus said, his voice tight. "We ride it out. This is just a correction."

Sarah laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. "A correction? Marcus, we're in a bear market. The investors are calling your convertible notes. You're ruined if we don't pivot now."

Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the office in a stark white light. For a moment, Marcus saw everything clearly—the empty desks of employees he'd laid off, the half-eaten orange on his coffee table from breakfast, the bull-headed determination that had driven him to ignore every warning sign.

His phone buzzed. A text from his wife: *I've taken the kids. Can't do this anymore.*

"You're still not listening," Sarah said, her voice softening. "I tried to warn you about the derivatives. I tried to tell you the bull run couldn't last forever."

Marcus looked at his hands—the same hands that had built something from nothing, now trembling. The lightning flashed again, closer this time. Thunder rattled the glass.

"What do I do?" he whispered.

"Sign the acquisition papers," Sarah said. "It's over."

But as another bolt of lightning struck somewhere nearby, Marcus realized something. Sometimes the storm has to burn everything down before you can see what's worth saving.

He stood up, walked to the window, and pressed his palm against the glass. "No," he said, surprising himself. "We don't sell. We rebuild."

The orange glow of sunrise was just beginning to bleed into the storm-darkened sky. Whatever came next, at least it would be his choice.
