Lightning in a Vitamin Bottle

Maya adjusted her phone against the bathroom mirror, practicing her new 'spy' technique. Not the creepy kind — just casual observation. At school, she'd perfected the art of watching everything while looking like she was watching nothing. It was practically a survival skill at Northwood High, where one wrong emoji in a group chat could end your social life.

Her cat, Luna, chose that precise moment to jump onto the counter and knock over the meticulously arranged vitamins on the windowsill. The orange bottle rattled dramatically, like the universe was commenting on Maya's mission.

"Really? Now?" Maya sighed, gathering the scattered supplements. Her mom had started her on a new routine — Stress Support Vitamin D, Focus Enhancement B-12, Sleep Better Melatonin. The bathroom counter looked like a pharmacy for someone who was definitely not okay.

Not that Maya could explain to her mom that her stress wasn't vitamin-deficiency related. It was Jason-related.

Jason, who sat behind her in AP Bio and drew elaborate doodles in the margins of his notebook. Jason, who always seemed to be saying something without saying anything at all. Jason, who Maya had been low-key spying on for three weeks now.

Okay, that sounded creepy even in her head.

Outside, lightning cracked across the sky. The storm that had been threatening all day was finally breaking. Maya's phone buzzed — group chat blowing up about party plans for Friday night. Everyone was going to Tyler's house. Everyone included Jason.

The lightning flashed again, illuminating her reflection. She looked different suddenly. Not the awkward girl who accidentally made eye contact for too long. Not the one who overanalyzed every text like she was decoding the Zodiac.

She was just Maya. Whoever that was.

Luna rubbed against her leg, purring like a tiny motor. Maya scooped up the cat and carried her to the window, watching the rain streak against the glass. The storm was beautiful chaos, no apologies.

"You know what?" she whispered to the cat. "I think I'm done spying."

She pulled out her phone, found Jason's contact, and typed: "Hey, you going to Tyler's on Friday?"

The lightning flashed one more time as she hit send. Sometimes you just had to create your own electricity.
