Lightning in a Spinach Salad

The lightning struck right as Maya's mom dropped her off at Jordan's party, the sky cracking open like some dramatic movie opening. Maya checked her reflection in the phone camera—spinach stuck between her front teeth, obviously. Perfect.

She couldn't bear to walk in there like this, but her phone was already at 3%. Just her luck. The hat she'd spent forty minutes perfecting—this vintage beret thing she'd thrifted—felt ridiculous now. Like she was trying too hard.

'Maya!' Chloe screamed from the doorway, pulling her into a hug that felt too tight. 'You came! And I love the hat, it's so you.'

Chloe was her oldest friend, the one who'd held her hair back when she got food poisoning from that sketchy taco truck. But lately, everything felt different between them. Chloe had gotten hot over the summer, like magically, suddenly the person everyone wanted to talk to at parties. Maya was still... Maya.

'Thanks,' Maya mumbled, trying to dislodge the spinach with her tongue while acting normal. 'You look amazing.'

The party was already chaos. Someone had brought a bear costume for some reason, and this guy Ethan was walking around in it, sweating profusely but owning it like it was the most normal thing ever. People were taking selfies with Bear Ethan like he was celebrity.

'Check your phone,' Chloe said, suddenly serious. 'Jordan posted that thing about you.'

Maya's stomach dropped. She'd been low-key ghosting Jordan's texts for weeks because every conversation turned into Jordan complaining about her ex, and Maya just couldn't bear it anymore. Apparently Jordan had noticed.

The post was petty. 'Some people think they're too good for their friends now.' Vague but targeted.

'Don't,' Chloe said, reading her reaction. 'Jordan's being dramatic. Everyone knows it.'

'Maybe they're right,' Maya said, feeling the words before she could stop them. 'Maybe I'm the problem.'

Outside, lightning flashed again, closer this time. The party continued like nothing was happening, but Maya felt like she was underwater. The spinach was still there. The hat felt stupid. The bear costume guy was now doing keg stands.

Then Chloe did something unexpected. She reached out and carefully picked the spinach from Maya's teeth with her thumbnail, wiped it on a napkin, and said, 'I got you. Always have.'

It was so gross but so Chloe that Maya started laughing. Real laughing, not the fake stuff she'd been doing all semester.

'Your hat,' Chloe added, 'is giving main character energy. Don't let anyone tell you different.'

The bear costume guy stumbled over, sweating through the furry head. 'What are we talking about? Spinach? I love spinach. Put it on everything.'

'Maybe that's why you're in a bear costume,' Maya said without thinking.

'Touché.' He pulled off the bear head, revealing a cute guy with messier hair than expected. 'I'm Lucas, by the way. And you're hilarious.'

Another lightning flash illuminated everything differently—the stupid bear costume, the perfect spinach-free smile, Chloe's I-told-you-so face, the hat that was actually kind of amazing.

'Maya,' she said. 'And I think this is the weirdest conversation I've ever had.'

'Cool,' Lucas said. 'Wanna get some food? I think they have those little spinach things.'

Maya looked at Chloe, who was already grinning like this was exactly what she'd planned all along. 'Go,' Chloe mouthed. 'I'll handle Jordan.'

Sometimes lightning did strike twice. And sometimes, just sometimes, spinach stuck in your teeth led to something kind of incredible.
