Lightning in a Bottle

Maya's house party was supposed to be the night everything changed.

She'd spent three hours perfecting her eyeliner, trying to channel her inner fox — confident, sly, untouchable. Parties always triggered this weird running commentary in her head: *don't stand by the wall, don't look desperate, definitely don't think about how they used to call you "goldfish brain" in seventh grade because you forgot everything when someone cute talked to you.*

Then Harper walked in.

Harper, with her lightning-streaked hair and that effortless cool that made everyone else feel like they were trying too hard. Harper, who immediately started flirting with Lucas — the same Lucas Maya had been lowkey obsessing over since September.

Maya felt like she was swimming in the deep end of someone else's pool. The basement was suddenly too hot, too loud, too everything. Harper's laugh echoed off the walls, and Lucas was practically falling over himself to respond, and Maya was just... there.

She caught Lucas's eye for like half a second. He gave her this sheepish little smile, like, *yeah, this is awkward, but what can you do?* And that was somehow worse than if he'd ignored her completely.

Maya grabbed her backpack and bolted up the stairs, pushing past couples making out in the hallway, hitting the front door at a full sprint. The cold air hit her face like a reality check.

"Maya!"

Her best friends were waiting by the curb in Jenna's older sister's Honda. Jenna leaned out the window, grinning. "We were about to send a search party. You good?"

Maya actually laughed. "Yeah. I'm good."

"Cool. We're going to Taco Bell. Get in."

And just like that, the night reset itself. Maya jumped into the backseat between Priya and Chloe, and they were complaining about homework and sharing nachos like the party had never happened.

Lucas texted her later: *u left early*

Maya stared at her phone, then deleted the message without responding. Some moments weren't meant to be captured. They were just... lightning in a bottle. Bright, beautiful, and gone before you could really hold onto them.

Besides, she had better things to do than chase someone who didn't know what he wanted. Like finish that TikTok she'd been promising Priya she'd help with.

Some nights, the real party wasn't where you thought it'd be. And that was okay.
