Lightning in a Bottle
Maya's orange hair dye job was supposed to be temporary. Just something to shake things up before sophomore year, you know? But standing in front of the bathroom mirror at 2 AM, hair literally glowing like radioactive Cheetos, she felt like a fraud. A total poser trying way too hard to be someone she wasn't.
That's when the lightning struck—not real weather, but that sickening flash of panic when your supposed best friend posts a TikTok roasting your " desperate makeover attempt." Thanks, Jasmine. Real solid.
Maya grabbed her phone, ready to DM Jasmine something she'd definitely regret, when movement outside caught her eye. A fox. Like, an actual fox, just chilling in her suburban backyard like it owned the place. It stared at her through the window, eyes glowing amber in the porch light, totally unfazed by her orange-hair crisis.
Something about that fox—just vibing there, being 100% itself without giving a crap what anyone thought—clicked something in Maya's brain. She posted a selfie captioned: "the aesthetic is giving chaotic energy and I'm here for it."
By third period Monday, half the hallway had orange something. Hair clips, nail polish, one girl with orange sneakers. Jasmine, now suddenly Maya's bestie again, was like, "OMG we're literally trendsetters."
Maya just laughed. "Yeah, sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night."
But walking home that afternoon, she spotted the fox again near the creek. This time, she didn't feel like a fraud. She felt like someone who could change her whole vibe in one weekend and somehow make it work.
"Thanks, fam," she whispered to the fox disappearing into the brush.
That night, she dyed the ends purple. Because why commit to just one color when you're busy figuring out who you're becoming anyway?
