Lightning in a Bottle
The pool party at Jessica's house was supposed to be chill, but my stomach was doing gymnastics. I stood by the snack table, nursing a warm soda, watching everyone else look effortless in their swimsuits. The backyard was basically a social hierarchy exhibition, and I was definitely in the spectator section.
"Hey, you gonna actually swim or just guard the chips all night?"
I turned around too fast and nearly knocked over a bowl of goldfish crackers. It was Tyler, who I'd had a massive crush on since bio lab when he let me borrow his pen after mine exploded. He was dripping wet, towel slung over his shoulder, grinning like he knew something I didn't.
"I'm thinking about it," I managed, which was a lie. I'd been thinking about how my one-piece was basically a statement that I wasn't trying too hard, which honestly just meant I was trying not to try.
He laughed. "You're overthinking again. I can tell. You get this little wrinkle between your eyebrows."
I felt my face get hot. Great. Now I was the girl with the wrinkle.
"My mom says I need to take more vitamin D," I blurted out. "Since I'm always inside. Being pale and stuff."
Tyler stared at me for a second. Then he cracked up. "Did you just randomly bring up supplements? That's so random. I love it."
Before I could die of embarrassment, he grabbed my hand. "Come on. The water's actually not that cold. And Jordan keeps doing cannonballs off the diving board, so it's entertaining."
I let him pull me toward the pool, my brain scrambling to catch up with my body. The backyard lights flickered as thunder rumbled in the distance. The weather app had said storms weren't supposed to hit until midnight.
"Last one in's a rotten egg!" someone screamed, and suddenly everyone was rushing toward the pool. Tyler squeezed my hand before letting go and diving in.
I stood at the edge, heart pounding, as lightning split the sky overhead. The whole backyard lit up purple-white for a second. Someone oohed. In that flash, I saw Tyler surface, water streaming from his hair, looking right at me.
I jumped.
The water was shocking but amazing, and when I came up for air, everyone was cheering like I'd done something brave instead of just jumping into a pool. Tyler swam over, splashing water in my face.
"See? Not so bad, right?"
I wiped water from my eyes, grinning like an idiot. "Actually kind of legendary."
Sometimes the scariest moments are the ones that change everything. And sometimes you just have to jump in.
