Lightning Cracked the Pyramid

I was already in full zombie mode at 2 AM, finalizing the last details for Maya's pool party. The invitation list had become this ridiculous social pyramid—Maya at the top, then her squad, then the rest of us scattered beneath like scattered debris. I'd spent three hours constructing the perfect playlist, only to have Maya text: "change it to more hype vibes."

The party arrived, and I stood by the pool clutching a red Solo cup like it was a lifeline. The water reflected string lights like stars, creating this vibe that felt both magical and totally staged. Across the pool, I caught Marcus watching me. He was the kind of guy who sat alone at lunch but always had this intensity that made you wonder what he was thinking about.

Suddenly, lightning split the sky—BAM—illuminating everything in this stark, ghostly flash. The party went silent. Thunder shook the ground like something from a disaster movie.

"Everyone inside now!" Maya's mom screamed, but Marcus and I barely moved. We were both staring at where the lightning had struck: the massive oak tree in Maya's backyard, now split perfectly down the middle, smoking slightly like something that had survived battle.

"That's insane," Marcus said, finally walking over. His voice was deeper than I expected. "Like nature just decided to destroy something beautiful for no reason."

"Or maybe it was," I found myself saying. "Sometimes things need to break so something new can happen."

He looked at me then—really looked at me—and I felt something shift. The social pyramid didn't matter anymore. Neither did the playlist or Maya's approval or the way I'd been measuring my worth in Instagram likes.

"You know," Marcus said, "I was gonna skip this. But I'm glad I came."

"Me too," I said, and it wasn't a lie.

The rain started, gentle at first, then harder. We didn't run inside. We stood there by the pool as lightning continued to crack the sky, watching the water ripple with each flash, feeling like we were witnessing something extraordinary—like the universe had cracked open just for us.

Marcus's hand found mine. Neither of us pulled away.
