Lightning at the Pyramid's Base
Maya tugged her beanie **down** to her ears, desperate to hide the disaster that was her **hair**. The rain had turned it into a frizzy halo, and now she was stuck at homecoming standing at the absolute bottom of the social **pyramid** like some awkward foundation block.
"You okay?" Leo asked. Of course he noticed. Leo, whose curls somehow looked intentional, who floated at the pyramid's apex without even trying.
"Fine," Maya lied. "Just fixing my **hat**."
His phone buzzed. "Your Instagram post from the game is blowing up, by the way. That photo you took of the storm? Insane."
Maya blinked. She'd posted the **lightning** strike that cracked across the sky during Friday's game—just a random shot from the bleachers, nothing like the curated posts the popular kids spent hours planning.
"Really?"
"Dude, everyone's sharing it. Even Sarah." Leo nodded toward the dance floor, where the pyramid's queen herself was actually using Maya's photo as her backdrop for TikTok. "It's so... raw. Like you actually captured something instead of just performing for the algorithm."
The coincidence was too perfect. The moment she'd tried to disappear under her hat, she'd accidentally created something real—something that resonated.
"You want to get some **water**?" Leo asked. "My treat from the vending machine."
"Sure." Maya pushed her **hat** up. Her **hair** was still a disaster. But outside, **lightning** flashed again, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like she was drowning at the bottom of some invisible social structure. She was just a girl who'd taken a photo that made people feel something.
"Your **hair's** actually kind of epic," Leo said as they walked. "Like, wild. In a good way."
Maya almost laughed. Maybe the pyramid was just in her head. Maybe—maybe she didn't have to climb it to matter.
