Lightning at the Pyramid
Maya stood at the bottom of the cafeteria's social pyramid, watching Brianna and her squad hold court at the apex like literal royalty. Freshman year was basically a tutorial level on hard mode, and Maya was still figuring out the controls.
"You look like a zombie," said Leo, sliding onto the bench across from her. "Rough night?"
Maya nodded, clutching her coffee like a lifeline. "Math test. My brain's been dead since 7 AM."
She wasn't lying. Between honors classes, track practice, and her parents' subtle-but-constant questions about her ~future plans~, Maya felt like she was operating on autopilot. Just going through the motions, you know? But then it happened—the lightning moment.
Some sophomore knocked over a backpack while goofing around, and this ridiculous, neon orange fedora tumbled out. Everyone cracked up. "Who wears that?" someone sneered.
The hat's owner, this quiet kid named Sam, looked like they wanted to disappear. But something in Maya snapped.
Without thinking, she grabbed the hat and plopped it on her head. "Actually," she announced to the suddenly silent cafeteria, "this is iconic. 10/10, no notes."
Leo's jaw dropped. Brianna's squad exchanged looks.
Then Sam grinned—really grinned—for the first time all year. "Thanks, Maya."
"For real though," Maya said, surprised at her own confidence. "Where'd you get it?"
"Thrift store. Five bucks."
"Dope." Maya slid the hat back across the table. "You should rock it Friday. The spring dance is supposed to be low-key anyway."
Later, Leo caught her by her locker. "That was... surprisingly cool of you."
Maya shrugged. "Somebody had to break the awkwardness. Besides, life's too short to care about the pyramid, right?"
He laughed. "Since when are you this wise?"
"Since I realized zombie mode isn't actually living." Maya adjusted her backpack, feeling surprisingly light. "Wanna get boba after practice?"
"Always."
And just like that, the lightning hadn't just struck—the whole damn sky opened up. Maybe freshman year wasn't about climbing the pyramid after all. Maybe it was about building your own.
