Lightning at the Pool Party

The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be chill. Just the squad, some snacks, maybe swimming if you felt like it. But my brain had other plans.

I stood by the edge of the pool, clutching my phone like it was a life raft. Everyone else was already in the water—Tyler doing cannonballs off the diving board, Maya and Jordan racing to the other end, even nerdy Caleb looking surprisingly confident in his neon green swim trunks.

"You coming in or what?" Tyler called, grinning that effortless grin that made my stomach do weird little flip things.

"Uh, yeah, just gotta check something," I lied. My palms were already sweating, and I hadn't even touched the water yet.

That's when Buster—Tyler's enormous, chaos-prone golden retriever—came barrelling out of nowhere, tennis ball clamped in his jaw like it was national treasure. Before anyone could react, he leaped.

Target: me.

I stumbled back, arms flailing, and went down hard. My phone flew. My dignity flew. Buster's wet paws landed squarely on my chest as he dropped the slobbery ball directly onto my face.

"DUDE," Tyler howled from the pool. "Your dog just took you OUT."

Everyone was laughing. I was mortified, ready to teleport into another dimension. But then I noticed something—Maya was doubled over so hard she accidentally inhaled half her pool noodle. Even Caleb, who never laughed at anything, was cracking up.

And Tyler? Tyler was just... smiling. Not making fun of me, just smiling.

Lightning cracked across the sky—a sudden summer storm rolling in. The pool lights flickered once, twice, then steadied.

"Storm's coming," Tyler said, climbing out. He reached a hand down to me. "You okay?"

I took it. His palm was warm against mine. "Yeah. I think so."

"Good," he said. "Because you're totally telling everyone that story at school on Monday."

I groaned, but I was smiling too. Sometimes the worst moments become the best ones. Sometimes you have to get taken out by an overenthusiastic dog to finally feel like you belong.

And sometimes, just sometimes, that's exactly what you needed.
