Lightning at the Padel Court

padelzombiecatlightningspy

Elena served the padel ball with practiced precision, the rubber surface gripping the glass wall behind her opponent. Three nights a week, she escaped here - the only place where the corporate zombie that walked through her days could die and be reborn, if only for an hour.

Her phone buzzed on the bench. Another encrypted message from her handler at Kestral Enterprises. 'Target confirmed. Proceed tonight.'

Elena wiped sweat from her forehead, thinking of Morph, her tabby cat waiting at home. At least one living being loved her for something other than her ability to infiltrate competitor boardrooms and steal trade secrets.

'You're distracted,' Richard said, returning her serve. He was one of the few genuine friends she'd made in this city, unaware that Elena had been sent to spy on his firm for six months.

Lightning cracked outside, illuminating the court in stark blue-white. The automatic lights flickered.

'Your serve,' Elena said.

She'd done this a dozen times before - infiltrate, befriend, betray, disappear. But something was different this time. Maybe it was Richard's laugh when he accidentally hit the ball into the wrong court. Maybe it was Morph purring against her chest that morning. Maybe she'd just been a zombie too long.

The handler's message burned in her pocket. Richard's company had developed technology that could revolutionize renewable energy storage. Kestral would bury it, like they buried everything that threatened their fossil fuel empire.

Another lightning strike, closer this time. Thunder rattled the glass walls.

Elena caught Richard's eye. 'What would you do,' she asked, 'if you found out someone you trusted was actually a spy?'

Richard laughed. 'Depends. Are they working for the good guys or the bad ones?'

The question hung in the air between them, suspended like the padel ball at the peak of its arc.

Elena walked to the bench, picked up her phone, and typed: 'I'm out. Find someone else.'

Then she deleted the encrypted messaging app.

'My turn to serve,' she said, returning to the court. Lightning flashed again, but this time she didn't look away.
