Lightning at Match Point
I couldn't believe I was actually here, standing at the padel courts with the popular crew. My heart was doing gymnastics as I adjusted my grip on the racquet, trying to look like I knew what I was doing. It was bad enough that I'd barely touched a racquet before today, but the real stress was Lucas being on the opposing team.
"You got this, Maya!" someone yelled from the sidelines, but I honestly wasn't sure.
The game was intense — the ball flying back and forth, everyone screaming and laughing. I was managing to hold my own until my phone buzzed in my pocket. I knew I shouldn't check, but habits die hard. Glancing at my iPhone, I saw the notification that made my stomach drop: my ex was commenting on my posts again.
"Focus, Maya!" Lucas called out, and I realized I'd completely missed the serve. The ball bounced past me, and I felt my face burning.
That's when everything went sideways. A stray cat darted onto the court, causing chaos as everyone scattered. Lucas jumped back to avoid it, landing right beside me.
"Nice save," he said, grinning. And just like that, we were both laughing.
Then came the lightning — not the scary kind, but those perfect, bright bolts that illuminate everything. We all stood there watching the sky, forgetting the game, forgetting the scores, just watching nature put on a show.
"Wanna bail?" Lucas asked me. "There's this bubble tea place..."
I looked at my phone one more time, then slid it into my pocket. "Yeah," I said. "Let's bounce."
Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan for. They're the ones that happen when the cat runs onto the court, when the lightning strikes, when someone unexpected shows up to play on your team.
