Leo's Lightning Friend

Leo loved storms. While other children hid under blankets, Leo pressed his nose against the window glass, watching the sky dance with light.

One rainy afternoon, an orange rolled across the kitchen floor—no ordinary orange, but one that glowed faintly, as if holding a tiny sun inside. Leo's grandmother had bought it from a mysterious peddler at the market. She placed it in the fruit bowl and went to make tea.

Curious, Leo picked up the strange orange. It pulsed warmly in his palm.Outside, thunder rumbled. The orange crackled like the first sparks of a campfire. Without thinking, Leo peeled it—but there was no fruit inside. Instead, a tiny creature the size of Leo's thumb tumbled out, made entirely of crackling blue lightning!

The creature stretched arms made of electric bolts and yawned a tiny thunderclap. "Thank you!" it squeaked, its voice like the static between radio stations. "I was trapped in there for three hundred years!"

Leo gasped. "Who are you?"

"I'm Zapp!" The little spirit spun happily, leaving trails of light. "I'm a lightning keeper! I belong in the clouds, but I got stuck inside that enchanted orange. Will you help me get home before the storm ends?"

Leo nodded eagerly. "How?"

"You must carry me to the highest hill and hold me up when the next lightning bolt strikes! Then I can catch a ride back to the sky!"

Outside, rain poured in silver sheets. Leo grabbed his yellow raincoat and scooped Zapp into his pocket, where the little spirit glowed like a living lantern.

"Running!" Zapp cried as a distant storm rumbled. "We must hurry!"

Leo was running through the garden, past the old oak tree where fairies supposedly slept, up the muddy path to Clover Hill. His boots splashed in puddles that reflected Zapp's blue light. Rain soaked his hair, but Leo didn't care. His new friend depended on him.

Atop the hill, wind whipped Leo's coat. Lightning forked across the sky—three seconds to thunder. The storm was moving closer.

"Now!" Zapp shouted over the wind. "Hold me high!"

Leo lifted the tiny spirit toward the heavens. Just then, a massive bolt of lightning streaked toward them—but it didn't strike Leo. It merged with Zapp, and suddenly Leo held not a tiny creature but a magnificent being of pure light, towering and beautiful.

"Thank you, my friend," Zapp's voice boomed like gentle thunder. "For your kindness, I leave you this gift."

Zapp pressed a tiny finger to Leo's forehead. A warm spark filled Leo's heart—the courage to face any storm.

"Remember," Zapp called as he shot upward into the clouds, "true friendship is the brightest light of all!"

Leo watched the sky, smiling, as the rain washed everything clean. In his pocket, the peel of the orange still glowed faintly, a reminder that magic exists for those brave enough to help others, even when storms are raging.
