Leo's Brave Splash
Leo sat by the edge of the pool, his toes barely touching the surface. The other kids laughed and splashed, but Leo couldn't join them. He was afraid of the water.
After swim class ended, Leo walked slowly home, kicking at pebbles on the sidewalk. Something shiny caught his eye—a puddle left by the morning rain, glowing like liquid diamonds in the afternoon sun.
Inside the puddle swam the tiniest goldfish he'd ever seen, no bigger than his thumb.
"Please help me!" squeaked a tiny voice. Leo blinked. The goldfish was talking! "I'm Finnegan. A storm washed me away from my pond. If this puddle dries up, I'll be stuck on land forever!"
Leo's heart raced. "But I don't know how to help you. I can't even go in the deep end of the pool!"
Finnegan swam in a worried circle. "The pond is just beyond that hill. If you carry me in a cup, I'll be saved. But you'll need to wade through a little stream to get there."
Leo gulped. The stream was deep. But looking at Finnegan's scared eyes, something stirred inside him.
"I'll try," Leo whispered, scooping up the goldfish in his water bottle.
The path wound through tall grass until it reached the babbling stream. Cool water rushed over smooth stones, sparkling in the dappled sunlight. Leo stepped in. The water tickled his ankles. Then his knees. Soon he was up to his waist, and to his surprise, he wasn't scared anymore. The water felt like a cool, gentle hug. He was doing it—he was swimming!
Finnegan cheered from his bottle. "You're a natural, Leo! Keep going!"
When they finally reached the pond, Leo gently poured Finnegan into the clear, blue water. The goldfish did a happy flip. "Thank you, Leo! You saved me!"
"No, Finnegan," Leo smiled, watching his new friend swim freely. "You saved me. Now I know I'm brave enough to face anything—even swimming!"
From that day on, Leo was the first one in the pool, and sometimes, just sometimes, he swore he saw a tiny golden flash beneath the surface, winking at him like a secret between friends.
