Leo and the Magic Hat

Leo was walking home from school when he spotted something shiny in a pile of autumn leaves. It was a hat—not just any hat, but a purple velvet hat with silver stars sewn all around the brim. Leo picked it up, and strange tingles danced up his arms.

"That's my hat!" a tiny voice squeaked.

Leo looked around. No one was there. Then he heard a splash—splash—splash coming from inside the hat itself! He carefully peeked over the brim.

Floating in a tiny magical pond inside the hat was a goldfish with scales that shimmered like rainbow confetti. The goldfish blew a bubble that popped and turned into a small cloud that hovered above Leo's head.

"I'm Finley," the goldfish said. "And I've been waiting for a friend like you!"

Leo's eyes went wide. "A talking goldfish? In a magic hat? This is the BEST DAY EVER!"

Finley explained that the hat could take them anywhere Leo could imagine. All they had to do was make a wish together. But there was one rule: they could only use its magic for kindness.

Leo's stomach gave a little rumble. He'd seen a new boy named Mateo at school today, sitting alone at lunch. Leo had wanted to say hello, but he'd been too shy.

"I wish..." Leo started, but then he stopped. His eyes lit up. "I know!"

He pulled his iphone from his pocket and opened the drawing app. With Finley swimming beside him in the magic hat, Leo drew the most magnificent picture—a friendly dragon flying over a castle, with a smaller dragon following behind.

"That's beautiful," Finley said. "But what's it for?"

"Tomorrow," Leo said with a determined smile, "I'm going to show this to Mateo and ask if he wants to draw dragons with me at recess. Everyone needs a friend."

Finley did a happy flip in his tiny pond. "Leo, you just used the best kind of magic—kindness!"

The next day, Leo sat next to Mateo. When he showed him the dragon drawing, Mateo's face lit up like sunshine. "I love dragons!" Mateo said. "My grandma tells me stories about them in Mexico. Want to draw together?"

Leo grinned so wide his cheeks hurt. "Yes!" And from inside his purple velvet hat (which he wore just in case Finley wanted to come along), he heard a tiny splash and the happiest goldfish giggle ever.

Sometimes, Leo learned, the bravest adventures are the ones where you simply say hello.
