Last Supper on the Pyramid's Edge

Elena scraped the last piece of spinach from her teeth, catching her reflection in the restaurant's darkened window. Hollow eyes stared back—eyes that had seen too much, reported too little, belonged to someone who'd forgotten who she was before she became a spy.

Across the table, Marcus laughed at something she hadn't heard. His smile was genuine, his interest in her authentic, and she was going to destroy him. The corporate pyramid they both served demanded it. He was climbing toward the C-suite; she'd been hired to ensure he never made it.

"You're quiet tonight," he said, reaching for her hand.

"Just thinking about work. You know how it is."

"I do." His thumb traced her palm. "Sometimes I feel like a zombie walking through those halls. Everyone's moving, no one's alive. Then I come here, and I remember what feeling human is like."

Elena's chest tightened. Three months undercover, and she'd done the one thing she shouldn't: fallen in love. The file on Marcus had been thin—ambitious, ruthless, a threat to her client's market position. Nothing about the way he cooked breakfast on Sunday mornings. Nothing about how he listened when she spoke, really listened, like her words mattered.

The spinach from dinner sat in her stomach like lead. Tomorrow, she'd deliver the report. Marcus would be fired, his reputation destroyed, his career in ruins. And she'd move on to the next target, the next lie, the next dinner with someone she'd have to betray.

"What if we left?" The words spilled out before she could stop them.

Marcus paused. "What?"

"The city. The jobs. What if we just... disappeared?"

Hope flickered across his face before something darker replaced it. Understanding, maybe. Or resignation. "You can't leave either, can you?"

Elena shook her head slowly.

"Then we're both already dead," he said, squeezing her hand. "Might as well enjoy the meal."

They finished their dinner in silence. Outside, the city lights blurred like tears. Elena was a spy who'd forgotten how to lie to herself, and somewhere in the space between duty and desire, something inside her finally broke open.

"Check your pockets when you get home," she whispered as they parted.

His name wasn't Marcus. Her name wasn't Elena. But the look they shared—that was real.

Some pyramids were worth toppling. Others, you simply had to climb alone.
