Laser Tag Revelation

Maya's orange team vest was already chafing by the time the sixth round started. The Sphinx-themed laser tag arena felt ridiculous with its papier-mâché pyramid in the corner and a sphinx statue that kept glitching—its LED eyes flashing like artificial lightning.

"You good?" Tyler asked, bumping her shoulder with his. He smelled like tropical vape smoke and the cheap cologne every guy at Northwood seemed to wear.

"Yeah," Maya lied, adjusting her headset. Her hands were sweating inside the plastic laser gun. Tyler's girlfriend, Chloe, was on the purple team across the arena, currently ducking behind the sarcophagus obstacle with her perfectly straightened hair.

The sphinx announced "GAME ACTIVE" in a robotic voice that cut through the thumping bass of the playlist. Maya's heart was already racing faster than the dubstep drop.

She and Tyler had been texting for weeks. Late-night convos that left her phone overheating against her pillow. Everyone knew Chloe and Tyler were basically endgame—homecoming king and queen energy—but something was off lately. Chloe had been distant, posting cryptic stuff on her story, and Tyler had been sliding into Maya's DMs with those "u up?" energy texts at midnight.

"Watch my six," Tyler said, grinning like they were in some action movie instead of a suburban laser tag place.

A stray cat had somehow gotten into the venue—it was currently sleeping on top of the pyramid platform, completely unbothered by the chaos of middle schoolers in tactical gear.

"I saw you and Chloe fighting at lunch," Maya said, her voice barely above a whisper. The laser tag guns beeped and flashed around them like angry fireflies.

Tyler's smile faded. "Yeah. She's been weird about me hanging with you."

"Hanging?" Maya raised an eyebrow. "Tyler, we've been texting till 2 AM every night this week."

The sphinx's eyes flashed blue—someone's vest had been tagged. Not hers. Not Tyler's.

"Maybe I don't want to just be 'hanging,'" Tyler said, and the way he looked at her hit like actual lightning—sudden, shocking, illuminating everything.

Maya's breath caught. This was it. The moment every cheesy coming-of-age movie had prepared her for, except none of them mentioned how badly her orange vest would chafe or how there'd be a random cat judging her life choices from atop a fake pyramid.

"I'm not Chloe's backup," Maya said, her voice steady despite her racing pulse. "And you're not gonna make me choose between being decent and getting what I want."

Tyler's expression shifted—surprise, then respect. "That's... honestly really mature."

"I'm not trying to be mature," Maya said, grinning now. "I'm trying to win this game."

She tagged him right in the chest sensor. His vest erupted in lights.

"You're dead," she said.

"Worth it," Tyler laughed.

The cat on the pyramid stretched and yawned like it had seen better plot twists. Maya realized her hands weren't sweating anymore. The sphinx's game clock counted down—thirty seconds left—and for the first time in weeks, she knew exactly who she was and what she wanted. And that was worth more than any homecoming crown.
