Lag, Luck, and the Bully's Hat

cablebullhat

Marcus's lucky hat — a beat-up Cubs snapback with a frayed brim — rested on his monitor. His precious ethernet cable lay coiled like a snake on the floor. Everything was set for the Valorant tournament that could finally get him noticed by the Exy Elite squad.

Then Brock walked in.

"What's up, nerd." Brock snatched the hat right off Marcus's desk. "Nice lid."

Before Marcus could react, Brock was already halfway across the esports lounge, laughing with his crew. Same bull, same horns. Brock had been making his life miserable since seventh gym class, when he'd "accidentally" spiked a volleyball into Marcus's face.

"Give it back, Brock. That was my dad's."

"Come get it, Pac-Man." Brock tossed the hat to his friend like it was a hot potato. They passed it around while Marcus stood there, fists clenched, face burning. Everyone was watching now. The tournament started in ten minutes. His whole setup was exposed.

Then Brock tripped over the ethernet cable.

The yank disconnected Marcus's laptop mid-queue. The tournament registration screen timed out.

"My bad." Brock didn't sound sorry at all. "Watch your cables, geek."

Something in Marcus snapped. Three years of taking it, three years of being the quiet kid who just wanted to game in peace. He marched over, grabbed his hat from Brock's confused friend, and planted himself in Brock's personal space.

"You just cost me a spot in the tournament. The one I've been practicing for since January."

Brock loomed over him, muscles tensing. "So?"

"So." Marcus met his eyes, which nobody ever did. "You don't get to ruin everything anymore. I'm done being your entertainment."

The lounge went silent.

Brock stared at him for a long five seconds. Then his shoulders dropped. "You've got guts, Marcus. More than most people here."

He held out his fist. Marcus bumped it, confused.

"There's an opening in our squad," Brock said, almost quietly. "Our support dipped last week. Tryouts are Monday. Bring that lucky hat."

Marcus sat back down, heart hammering, hat on backward, cable reconnected. Some days, the bull didn't chase you. Some days, it pointed you toward the gate.
