Knee Pads and Courage

padelfoxbaseballbull

Maya's knees were literally shaking. First day at the new rec center, and everyone already looked like they belonged in a Nike commercial. She clutched her padel racket like a lifeline, regretting everything.

"You gonna stand there all day or actually play?" called a lanky guy with neon green sneakers. His friends snickered.

Maya's face burned. This was exactly why she'd begged her mom to let her stay homeschooled. But no, Mom insisted she needed "socialization." Now here she was, about to humiliate herself in front of the entire youth league.

Then she saw it—a rust-red fox darting behind the chain-link fence that bordered the outdoor courts. It paused, watching her with bright, intelligent eyes. Something about its fearlessness settled her nerves. If a literal wild animal could chill in this chaos, she could survive a dumb sport.

She stepped onto the court.

Her partner turned out to be the lanky guy—Leo, his nametag read. He mumbled something about "being stuck with a newbie" but his expression softened when she actually managed to return the first serve.

"Yo, not bad," he said, actually impressed. "You play before?"

"Uh, tennis? Like, three years ago?"

He grinned. "Close enough. Let's crush these fools."

They lost every game, but Maya found herself laughing anyway. Leo kept making self-deprecating jokes about how his baseball coach would kill him for his footwork, and somehow the losing didn't matter anymore.

The real test came later when the group headed to the parking lot. Maya noticed her bracelet snagged on something—a mini bull figurine dangling from someone's backpack. It was Javier, the guy who'd been watching her all afternoon.

"That your school mascot?" she asked, trying to sound casual.

"Nah, it's, um, from my abuela." He looked away. "It's supposed to be for courage. Sounds dumb, I know."

Maya thought of the fox. "Not dumb. I needed courage too today."

Javier's eyes met hers. Something shifted—recognizable, electric. "Wanna hang after practice tomorrow? There's this boba place..."

"Definitely." Maya smiled, genuinely for the first time all day. Her knees might still be trembling, but somehow, she knew she'd be back.
