High Water Mark

The hurricane had stranded them on the roof for three days, and somewhere around hour forty, Elena realized she'd been living like a **zombie** for years. Not the undead kind—the ordinary kind. The kind that shows up to work, makes dinner, goes through motions while something vital rots away inside.

"I never wanted children," she said to Richard, watching the **water** rise around their house. It had reached the second floor windows now, brown and relentless.

Richard didn't look at her. He was gripping the **palm** tree they'd tied themselves to, his knuckles white. "I know."

"You don't, though. You still think I'll change my mind."

The rescue helicopter's **cable** had snapped two hours ago, taking their last hope with it. Now they were just waiting, watching the floodwaters climb.

A noise made them both turn—a **fox**, red and impossibly alive, paddling toward them through the debris. It scrambled onto the roof, shook itself off, and curled up near Richard's feet like it belonged there.

Richard stared at the animal, then finally looked at Elena. "Remember that weekend in Palm Springs? You said you'd never felt more alive than when you were running from that storm."

"I also said I'd never marry a man who couldn't decide what he wanted."

The fox yawned, unconcerned with their drowning marriage.

"I decided," Richard said quietly. "I chose you. Even if it meant never having the family my mother keeps asking about."

Elena felt something crack open in her chest—something she'd welded shut years ago. "Then why have you been looking at me like I'm incomplete?"

"Because I thought I could be happy with less. I was wrong."

The water kept rising, but suddenly the roof didn't feel quite so small. The fox stretched and settled into the space between them, and for the first time in years, Elena didn't feel like she was waiting for her real life to begin.
