Hierarchies of Greed

The pyramid sat in the center of the conference room, a three-dimensional cardboard monstrosity covered in names and arrows. Elena stared at it, the visual representation of the multilevel marketing scheme her brother had gotten himself tangled in three years ago.

"It's not a scheme, El. It's opportunity."

She'd heard those words a thousand times. Now she was here, at his apartment, sorting through his things after the heart attack that took him at forty-two. The medical examiner said stress. Elena said years of chasing recruits and buying inventory he couldn't afford.

Her phone buzzed. Another text from David, her ex, wanting to talk. Always running, that was her—from conversations, from commitments, from anything that might require her to stay still long enough to feel the weight of her own choices.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. She opened it out of habit, found a bag of spinach turning slimy in the crisper drawer.expiration date from last month. Her brother had been so focused on building his "business" that he'd forgotten to feed himself properly.

Elena remembered their mother making spinach salads when they were kids, the way her brother would complain but eat it anyway because "it'll make you strong." Iron. Strength. All the things he thought he was chasing with those recruitment meetings and conference calls.

She threw the spinach in the trash and slid down the kitchen wall, sitting on the cold linoleum. For the first time in months, she stopped running. Let herself feel it all—the anger at the system that had consumed him, the guilt for not pushing harder when she first noticed the signs, the hollow space where her little brother used to be.

Outside, the city kept moving. People running toward things, away from things, climbing their own pyramids, convinced the view from the top would be worth the climb. Elena closed her eyes and just breathed, finally understanding that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is stand still.
