Hat Trick at Ryan's Party
Maya's palms were literally sweating through her favorite ripped jeans. Standing outside Ryan's house, she adjusted the oversized beanie she'd stolen from her older brother's closet. It was giving main character energy, or at least that's what she'd told herself in the mirror for twenty minutes before leaving.
Inside, the bass thumped like a second heartbeat. Groups of kids clustered around the kitchen island, red solo cups in hand. Maya felt like she was observing a rare species from behind glass. She grabbed a Coke from the cooler and practically hyperventilated into the can.
"Yo, is that Jordan's old hat?" someone called out. Of course someone noticed. Jordan was basically a legend at Northwood High. His social currency was worth more than Maya's entire existence.
"Yeah, I... found it," Maya lied, because admitting she'd swipe-style borrowed it would send her straight to loser town.
Before she could spiral further, a golden retriever bounded through the crowd like it owned the place. The dog stopped dead in front of Maya, tail wagging with zero shame. It nudged her hand with its wet nose, demanding pets like it was totally normal.
"That's Buster," a voice said behind her. She turned to see a guy with glasses and an honest-to-god smile that wasn't trying too hard. "He only likes cool people."
Maya snorted. "Clearly defective then."
"I'm Leo," he said, extending his hand. His palm was warm, solid, not gross or sweaty at all. "You wanna see something wild?"
Intrigued despite herself, Maya followed him to the backyard where a bunch of kids were playing beer pong with soda. Leo's dog sat obediently at his feet, watching like a tiny furry referee.
"Watch this," Leo said. He tossed a ping pong ball. Buster leaped up and caught it mid-air. The group went absolutely wild.
Maya found herself laughing, genuinely laughing, for the first time all night. She adjusted her hat, suddenly aware she wasn't sweating anymore. Sometimes the best moments happened when you stopped trying so hard to be someone else.
"Wanna play?" Leo asked. "And yeah, you can keep the hat. It looks better on you anyway."
Maya smiled, palm dry, heart lighter than it had been in weeks. "Bet."
