Hat Trick

Marcus adjusted his signature black beanie, the one he refused to take off even during gym class. It wasn't just a hat; it was his armor. Without it, he felt exposed, like a zombie shuffling through the hallways of Northwood High, invisible and undead.

He'd been running from something lately—mostly his own thoughts. But when he found himself literally sprinting through the park at 11 PM, it wasn't track practice. It was panic.

Caught in a lightning flash of teenage stupidity, he'd been spying on his crush's Instagram stories again, this time noticing something that made his stomach drop. Sarah was at Jake's party. The same Jake who'd sworn he'd never invite her after their fight sophomore year.

Marcus's phone buzzed. A DM from Sarah: "hey u outside jakes house? that's weird lol"

He froze. Had she seen him? Or worse, had someone else?

The thunder cracked overhead as he mentally raced through all the social catastrophes awaiting him Monday morning. He could already hear the whispers in homeroom.

Then lightning illuminated something else: Jake's driveway, where Sarah stood alone, checking her phone, looking as awkward as Marcus felt inside.

His phone buzzed again: "come say hi weirdo"

Marcus adjusted his hat, took a breath, and started walking toward her. Maybe running wasn't always the answer. Sometimes you had to stop, take off your armor, and actually show up.
