Hat Hair Lightning Strike

Maya's hair had a mind of its own. Literally. Every morning was a battle against the frizz that exploded from her scalp like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket.

"Just wear the hat," her bestie Chloe said, tossing a beanie across the lunchroom. "Problem solved."

"I can't wear this forever." Maya sighed, pulling the hat down. "It's like I'm hiding."

"You're not hiding. You're mysterious." Chloe raised an eyebrow. "Besides, Tyler thinks it's cute."

Maya's stomach did that ridiculous flippy thing. Tyler. The junior varsity quarterback with actual brain cells.

"That's such bull," Maya said, though her cheeks heated up. "He probably doesn't even know I exist."

"Then explain why he's staring at you right now."

He was. Tyler was totally looking. And smiling.

Maya's palm sweat hit panic level levels. What if she talked to him and her hair ESCAPED the hat? What if—

CRASH.

Lightning struck the transformer outside the cafeteria. The entire building plunged into darkness.

"Everyone stay calm!" Principal Miller's voice boomed through the emergency system. "We're experiencing a power outage. Please remain seated with your current lunch companions."

Current lunch companions. Meaning Tyler, who'd slid into the seat beside her three seconds before the lights died.

"Hey," his voice came through the darkness. Cool, steady. "You're Maya, right?"

"Yeah."

"Cool hat."

"Thanks."

"You know," he said, "my cousin has curly hair too. She spent years fighting it before she learned to work with it. It's actually pretty sick when she embraces it."

Maya's breath hitched. He knew. Or he guessed.

"It's a total disaster," she whispered.

"Lightning just struck the building and we're all still alive," he said. "Pretty sure your hair can't be worse than that."

She laughed. Actually laughed.

"Show me?" he asked.

Maya pulled off the hat. Her hair sprang free, wild and untamed and taking up half the booth.

"See? Disaster."

"Nah," Tyler said. "It's got character. Like you."

The lights flickered back on. They were inches apart. Everyone was staring. But for the first time, Maya didn't care.

"Want to sit with me tomorrow?" she asked.

"Only if you promise to wear the hat sometimes," he grinned. "I'm into mysterious."

Maya smiled, hair wild and free. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.
