Hat Hair & Heroes

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could practically wring them out like a sponge. Eighth grade talent show. Five minutes until she went on stage. And her hair? A total crime scene.

"You got this," her best friend Chloe said, but her eyes said 'yikes, that's a lot of frizz.'

Maya pulled her beanie down lower. Underneath sat a disaster – she'd tried to dye her hair purple last night because YouTube said it was easy. It wasn't. Now she had patchy blotchy hair that looked like a grape exploded on her head. Hence the hat.

"What if they laugh?" Maya whispered. Her palms left damp spots on her jeans.

"Then they laugh. Who cares?" Chloe shrugged. "You're doing Beyoncé. Nobody's gonna notice your hair when you hit that high note."

But Maya's stomach was doing backflips. She reached into her backpack and her fingers brushed against soft brown fur – Bearington. The stuffed bear she'd had since she was three. Her dad gave him to her before he moved out. Bearington had seen her through everything: nightmares, math tests, the time she threw up in the middle school cafeteria. She'd brought him for luck, even though bringing a stuffed animal to eighth grade was basically social suicide.

"Maya Johnson, you're up!" Mr. Harrison's voice boomed.

Her heart hammered. She stood up, Bearington hidden in her bag, and walked toward the stage. Halfway there, her beanie caught on something.

It fell off.

The purple blotchiness. The frizz. The everything.

Someone giggled.

Maya's face burned. But then she remembered something her mom said: Sometimes you gotta bear it anyway. (Pun unintended, but Bearington would've approved.)

She kept walking. Got to the mic. Took a breath.

"Sorry about the hair," she said into the mic. "Tried to be a DIY YouTube star. 0 out of 10, would not recommend."

People laughed – but nice laughs. Relatable laughs.

Then she sang. And when she hit that high note? She wasn't the girl with the bad hair or the stuffed bear in her backpack or the sweaty palms. She was Maya, period.

Afterward, Chloe ran up. "You crushed it!"

"My hair looks crazy, doesn't it?"

"Yeah," Chloe grinned. "But you know what? You made crazy look epic."

Maya reached into her bag and squeezed Bearington's paw. Sometimes you just gotta take off the hat, show the messy parts, and sing anyway.
