Hat Hair Hero

Maya's frizzy hair had a mind of its own, especially on humid days like today. She tugged her beanie down, hoping nobody noticed the Afro puff trying to escape underneath.

"You're literally doing it again," said Kai, her best friend since kindergarten. "Spying on Jordan's Instagram from behind that tree isn't cute."

"I'm not spying!" Maya lied. "I'm just... strategically observing."

Jordan, the cute junior with the dreamy eyes, was standing by the school carnival's mechanical bull ride. He looked nervous, twisting the hem of his vintage band tee.

"Go talk to him!" Kai shoved Maya forward.

Maya stumbled, her hat flying off. Her hair burst free—a glorious, wild explosion of curls that defied gravity and humidity alike. Jordan turned, and their eyes met.

"Wow," he said, staring.

Maya's face burned. She was about to bolt when she noticed Jordan looking terrified, not judgmental. He was staring at the mechanical bull like it was about to come alive and eat him.

"You scared?" she asked, surprising herself.

"Terrified," Jordan admitted. "My dad wants me to ride it. Says it'll build character or something."

Maya's hair caught the wind, wild and unapologetic. Something shifted in her chest. Who cared about perfect hair or looking cool? This guy was about to face a literal bull.

"I'll go first," she heard herself say. "If I survive, you're next."

She climbed onto that mechanical bull, held on for dear life as it bucked and spun. Her hair went everywhere. People cheered. She fell off laughing, grass-stained and sweaty.

Jordan's face lit up. "That was awesome."

"Your turn," Maya grinned, hair chaos and all.

Maybe perfect hair wasn't the point. Maybe being real—wild, messy, brave—that was the actual flex.
